Summer is a season of new beginnings. By now, you must be ready to tackle shaking out the winter cobwebs and doing a bit of a refresh around your home. I'm not talking an extreme renovation and remodeling, but more like a decorating mini makeover with a new piece of furniture or lighting. Or even a seasonal swap of pillows, throws and rugs.
The Web is kind of amazing insofar as it puts the inventory of big home retailers at your fingertips. But the downside of that is, THERE. ARE. TOO. MANY. THINGS. to wade through. I get anxiety just seeing that there are over a thousand patterned rugs available at any given store because I want to look at them all (to make sure I'm not missing any gems on the last page of search results)! And if you want to comparison shop, well, that's a whole other time suck - until now. Because we've taken the legwork out of shopping two strictly online home retailers known for their huge inventories (and competing TV advertisements): Wayfair and Overstock. And for ease, we've organized our finds into four categories: rugs, furniture, lighting and decor.
If you’re the type of person who gets retail brain and blurred vision at the sight of so many deals, Wayfair’s site will also feature live, on-site videos of product reviews to keep you from buying something you’ll regret. And just in case this retail frenzy wasn't already extreme enough, Wayfair will grant you an extra 40% off at check out on select items if you share the deals on social media.
After pitting 20 like items against each other, here's how things turned out: In a few cases, the stores had the same prices, but generally, Wayfair was a bit cheaper when it came to furniture, and Overstock had better deals on rugs. The results were mixed for our lighting and general decor searches, but Wayfair had a little bit of an edge in these categories, too. That said, it is worth checking both sites when you're ready to make a major purchase. They do carry much of the same items, but the names are often different, meaning you have to use precise search terms (“Sputnik,” for example, not just gold chandelier), to locate identical items. Often, the best way to tell is through photography. They use some of the same styled images, which are likely from the vendors themselves (putting that image into Google Image Search can also help you).
And obviously, you'll be needing home delivery since both companies don't exist as brick and mortar stores. Wayfair offers free shipping on most orders over $49. For Overstock, a $45 purchase qualifies for free shipping in the lower 48 states. So here goes nothing … take a look at what we found.
The new collection is for fashion-forward shoppers who don't want to compromise cost or convenience on quality pieces — as Wayfair's Chief Merchandising Officer, Steve Oblak, echos about the brand's ethos, "We created Hashtag Home to help shoppers express their unique style and personality with furniture and décor that’s both on-trend and affordable." The chic-modern stock is exclusive to Wayfair and will refresh seasonally with design trends that can be easily sorted to shop by color, room, or favorite finds under $100.
Although it wasn't easy to narrow down, we rounded up over 20 cart-worthy pieces from the budget-friendly line ahead — there's everything from a blood-orange retro-style armchair to a painted hot-pink side table, a rainbow assortment of melamine dinnerware, geometric-shaped bookshelves, and more.
Wayfair's furniture is not only comparable to traditional furniture stores, it's the exact same furniture. American Drew, Klaussner, Flash Furniture, AAmerica, Magnussen, Universal furniture, and literally hundreds of others -- they are all sold on Wayfair.com and at traditional furniture retailers.
The quality ranges from Ikea grade furniture made by South Shore (South Shore Lexington Collection Platform Bed) to very top end of traditional designs with American Drew (American Drew Jessica Mcclintock Panel Bed).
Wayfair doesn't focus on a particular price point. They sell Target quality furniture all the way up to the very finest modern designs from Knoll furniture. Think of them as having the combined inventory of Target, Crate and Barrel, and all the way up to West Elm in one giant catalog.
